ABOUT THE METHOD
The Mayron Cole Piano Method provides students with a classical piano education in a fast-paced student-centered class with their friends. Written by a piano instructor with 40 years of teaching experience, The Mayron Cole Piano Method emphasizes staff-note reading, rhythm counting, and sight-reading. Without the use of gimmicks, The Mayron Cole Piano Method teaches beginners through advanced pianists to read music and accompany other musicians which leads to a lifetime of enjoying playing the piano.
PROGRESSION OF THE LEVELS
The Mayron Cole Piano Method teaches beginners to correctly count rhythm, the keys on the piano, and the fundamentals of staff-note reading with engaging music and corresponding theory fun sheets. Students then progress through a graduated course of staff-note reading and advanced theory which ultimately creates musical independence.
VILLAGE MUSICIANS
Mayron's goal is to create pianists who are "village musicians." As adults, pianists who play for weddings, church services, funerals, or accompany choirs, do not have months to spend learning each composition. Village musicians are required to learn multiple compositions in just a few days. Therefore, students of The Mayron Cole Piano Method learn at least one new composition each week. Even advanced students only spend a week or two on a composition. This fast-paced environment keeps students engaged through their teenage years, and trains them to be fearless about learning compositions in a limited amount of time.
A FEW WORDS ON FINGER NUMBERS
Most of the other piano methods currently on the market rely on teaching the student to read fingering numbers rather than actually reading the staff notes. "Place your hand here and push down fingers 3, 2, 4, 3, 1." The problem with this approach is that advanced pianists must be prepared to play every key on the piano with any finger on either hand. Reading fingering might give quick results at the beginner level, but the student is not actually learning to read the staff notes. Therefore, when the music becomes advanced enough to move past the beginner level, the student of those other methods flounders and usually quits. The Mayron Cole Piano Method, on the other hand, takes the time to build a strong foundation upon which the student's musical knowledge can grow. For this reason, students of The Mayron Cole Piano Method have the ability to progress up to advanced material. It is because of the strong foundation that our method provides, that The Mayron Cole Piano Method is the only piano method that takes students from kindergarten to college.
A FEW WORDS ON RHYTHM
Most of the other piano methods currently on the market rely on teaching students to play folk songs to which they already know how to sing the tune. Students of those methods are not reading the rhythm written in the music but are instead simply humming the tune in their heads. Since those students are not learning to correctly sight-read rhythms, they can only play compositions which they have heard before. In The Mayron Cole Piano Method, on the other hand, the majority of the compositions are original to our method to insure that students learn to sight-read rhythms. Mayron's music has been taught to thousands of students worldwide for over 30 years, so each composition has been student-tested and approved. Teachers of The Mayron Cole Piano Method are thrilled when even their first year students can correctly sight-read compositions, proof that they are in the process of training musically independent village musicians.
GROUP PIANO - WHY NOW?
The shift from private lessons to group piano classes became feasible with the development of electronic pianos. Think about it... why would piano lessons have evolved as a solo activity? Everything else is taught to children in groups: karate, ballet, soccer, even reading and math. What made learning to play the piano so different? Quite simply, the piano itself. In the past a piano teacher could only own one acoustic piano. They are big, expensive, and loud. With the development of electronic pianos, however, everything changed: group piano classes are energetic and fun! Plus, children learn to play the piano better when they are taught in small groups. When children are having fun in piano class, they pay attention to the activity at hand while learning to become independent pianists. So join the fun and learn how to play the piano!
PIANO LESSONS WIRETHE BRAIN FOR LEARNING
There is an exciting body of research that indicates that music instruction at an early age actually wires the brain for learning… In a study published in Neurological Research, Dr. (Frances) Rauscher (psychologist at the University of Wisconsin) found that… children who received piano keyboard lessons scored significantly higher on spatial reasoning tests than the other children (not taking piano lessons) who were matched in IQ and socio-economic status – 34% higher to be exact. Spatial-temporal reasoning involves higher brain functions that are needed to solve complex math and science problems. Thus, the findings pointed to a direct link between music instruction and math and science aptitude… She (then) replicated her earlier study but used… group piano instruction rather than private lessons.
